BOROSILICATE, familiar as PYREX kitchenware and laboratory apparatus, is respected for its exceptional clarity and strength. It was developed in this country in 1914 for use in locomotive headlights, and used in Germany even earlier. The growing borosilicate color palette is only about thirty years old. Glass, a supercooled liquid made from melting sand, which is silica - the most common element on earth, was first used as jewelry in Egypt as early as 4000 bce; later as bangles in India. We continue to dig through history in search of glass cuffs made before our own in 1983.
